  • 4.0 out of 5 stars from lfb68 -- Dick Kitchel had a sad ending to his life : A Murder In My Hometown happened in my own hometown, Corvallis OR. I am a member of the 1968 class where Dick Kitchel was also a member. Most of the history in this narrative refreshed my memories of living in this era, this hometown, fellow classmates, and events of my Senior year of High School. Dick Kitchel had a sad ending to his life. There were no answers after his death. No one was arrested and charged with his murder. The author does an excellent job of researching the events and re-interviewing relevant people from 1967 when Dick died. This book was meaningful to me for having lived with this story. • 1.0 out of 5 stars from kindle*lover -- The worst book I've ordered on Amazon : I expected to like this book, because I'm researching the impact of youth homicides. But this book just wasn't interesting or well written. It was packed with information about the town and the high school the author attended, with entire chapters devoted to topics that had nothing to do with the murder. The author had amazing access to police records considering it's still (or should be) an open case, and even then she couldn't make this a compelling read. The book itself felt cheaply made and wasn't comfortable to hold in the hand, but that was the least of it. In the end, there's an update about major characters in the book. I was so bored that I could only remember the murdered boy, the suspect, and the author. I guess if you're from the same hometown, this would be a great read. But if you don't know these people or the place, and you're looking for insight about crime, investigations, and those involved in a case, look elsewhere. A best-selling author yet. Really? • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Jan Cameron -- Absorbing, great read regarding 1960's cold case : This book provides insight into a cold case from 1967. ( Reviewed in the United States on June 2, 2018 )
  • 2.0 out of 5 stars from DougP -- Less Than I Expected : After completing this one, I was not quite sure what I had just read. Being an Oregon resident living not too far from Corvallis, there was great promise in this book telling the true-crime story from 50 years in the past. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Book Reader -- A murder and a look at small town life : I enjoyed this look at life in Corvallis, Oregon back in the 1950s and 60s. The author did a wonderful job with the setting and cast of characters. As a member of the same high school, she knows it well. ( Reviewed in the United States on May 23, 2018 )
  • 4.0 out of 5 stars from Cover to Cover -- A Walk Down Memory Lane : A walk down memory lane more than a “true crime” book, but nevertheless well researched, well written and interesting. Having previously read a true crime book that Ms Morris co-wrote, I assumed this would follow the genre. Life in the ‘60s and high school memories seem to prevail over particulars of the unsolved murder. The author does a good job of bringing out the differences when investigating a crime when there is a lack of physical evidence, concerned witnesses and absent willing family members to help solve a murder. Investigative techniques have improved so much over the last 50 years or so, and this book bears stark evidence that this is true. ( Reviewed in the United States on July 4, 2018 )
  • 4.0 out of 5 stars from CJ -- Good Book about an actual "unsolved" murder : Enjoying this so far though I am not through. It may be more meaningful to me than some because I lived there during this time frame. Also gives a feeling of what it was like to live in a small college town in the 60's. It is hard for people who have not lived in this atmosphere to relate to it, but the author does a really good job. Well written; easy read. ( Reviewed in the United States on June 2, 2018 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from MB -- Excellent well-researched book : A fascinating true-crime story of a murder of a classmate, Dick Kitchel, in my hometown, Corvallis Oregon, in the fall of ‘67, a few months after I graduated from high school there. A shocking event for our seemingly-idyllic small town where there was virtually no crime in the 50s and 60s. Story of Corvallis as well as the murder – so much I was unaware of. I had limited awareness of the class divide in Corvallis then, just assuming everybody had supportive families as I did. Dick did not. This book is well researched and written, and gives respect for a deceased classmate 50 years after his murder. This is the first book I have read by Rebecca Morris and I look forward to reading more. I highly recommend. ( Reviewed in the United States on July 23, 2018 )
  • 3.0 out of 5 stars from A. Linton -- Nothing to grab the reader's imagination or interest : Two things struck me about this book - the title which is intriguing and the fact it was free on kindle unlimited. However I found the execution to be disappointing. As a true crime tale it falls down as there is no satisfactory outcome. The writing is pleasant enough but the book doesn't have charm to work as a coming of age story - and the premise - how the town was changed forever because of the murder - doesn't really materialise. The town and the people here never really came to life - it just feels like the average story anyone could write about their childhood with nothing to either like or dislike. There is no real depth to any of the characters she describe - none of them come alive on the page. And the pacing is poor - for a true crime story to work the author has to create some kind of suspense in the mind of the reader- not difficult in this case as virtually no-one will have heard of this murder. By the end I was finding it a chore to plod through. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on September 19, 2018 )
