Over 700 end notes and a 20 year research of every newspaper in the World has proven effective in Mr. Hillmann laying out the "case" of the "Great Chicago Fire." Numerous maps and illustrations of Chicago back in 1871 are invaluable along with the timeline included at the beginning of paragraphs place "you" the reader at TGCF like no Cecile B DeMille could ever do. Holmgren -- A Shockingly Fresh Perspective to a Topic That Has Needed a Revisit : I picked this up on my kindle last week after reading that the anniversary of the fire was next week. This was an excellent read. It's definitely written like a "historic investigation" as the author refers to it. Over the years I've read numerous articles and a book or two on the subject as well. In The Great Chicago Fire: The Southern Rationale the author sets out to make two points; first was that the fire was the work of a group of incendiaries and second is that this group came from the South. Hillmann’s book; THE GREAT CHICAGO FIRE: The Southern Rationale, and something doesn’t add up. In fourth grade we learned about the red stars and blue bars on the Chicago flag, and that one of the stars represented the fire. Now this book has me thinking that the stars and bars flag of the Confederacy may have had more to do with the fire than Mrs. O’Leary’s cow the nuns blamed.
